NMACDA

General Meeting

January 29, 2010

10:32 am

The meeting was called to order by President Diane Schutz.

Announcements:

            1.  Ms. Schutz welcomed all to the meeting and introduced the past presidents of this organization.

            2.  The hospitality room is courtesy of the members of Ms. Schutz’s Trail’s West

Choir.  A big thank you goes out to them.

            3.  Another huge thank-you goes to Alan Kuncel for maintaining our web-site so well.

Treasurer’s Report:

1.  Brian Uerling emailed Ms. Schutz the report in a format she could not open.  It will be posted on the web-site.

2.  The bank accounts are now in compliance with ACDA regulations.

3.  Thanks to Brian Uerling for taking such good care of our financial matters.

Old Business:

1.  Ms. Schutz  announced the formation of the collegiate choir which will replace the collegiate choir at NMMEA convention.  She also announced our assistance in the amount of $750 to launch this project.

2.  Web-Site:  The old one has finally been dispensed with.  Alan Kuncel announced that he will try to get all pertinent information on the home-page, which will make it easier for some us.  He also needs to email addresses of everyone.  If he does not have someone’s, please get it to him.

            3.  2010 All-State Festival:

                        a. Thanks to the festival committee.

                        b.  We have new name tags.

                        c.  Thanks to Trail’s West for serving as monitors.

                        d.  We have a new banner.

e.  Placques will be presented to NMSU for their kind hospitality over the years and to Dr. Jerry Ann Alt, the founder of the children and youth choirs, for her vision and dedication in this project.

New Business:

            A.  Music and Worship Festivals:

These have the potential for expanding our membership to include church musicians.  We will get a complete roster of church musicians from Music Mart for mailing; we will keep conductors/clinicians in-state for a while; and we will try to get these up and going in 2010.  Watch the web-site for information.

            B.  Increasing membership:

Any choral musician is welcome to join ACDA.  The state chapter gets back a portion of the dues paid.  Encourage any choral musician you know to join the association. There was a long discussion about requiring membership in NMACDA in order for one’s students to participate in the all-state festival..

MOTION:  It was moved by Marilyn Bernard, seconded by Danny Flores that only students of NMACDA members be allowed to audition for Youth/Elementary All-State.  Motion carried.

            C.  School Music Programs and budget cuts:

President Schutz said that regardless of what Governor Richardson says about cutting the education budget, it is going to be cut to some extent.  The cuts will probably impact the fine arts areas by cutting personnel.

Suggestions:  Help each other by sharing resources.  Become an advocate by contacting our legislators.  Get parents involved in advocacy. Figure out ways to get music teachers to the legislative sessions.  Figure out a way to get the elementary/middle school music teachers back to the NMMEA convention (perhaps an elementary choir of some kind at that meeting would cause school districts to grant release time to these teachers).

            D. All-State Festival 2011

The recommendations of the executive board were presented to the meeting (see the minutes for January 8, 2010).

In addition:

1.  The conductors will be Dr. Jennifer Haywood for the youth and Josh Pedde for the children.  As soon as their programs are finalized, information will be posted to the web-site.

2.  Motion:  Ed Torres moved, and was seconded by ____that we accept the invitation of NMSU to be our hosts next year.  Motion carried.

3. Motion:  Louise Loomis moved, Marilyn Bernard seconded, that the elementary audition recordings be done with accompaniment only, NOT music minus one.  Motion carried.

4.  Motion:  Beth Borchert-Thomas moved, Paul Hallsted seconded, that the youth choir audition be recorded with music minus one. Motion carried.

5.  There was a complaint from a local parent that both audition pieces for 2010 were sacred pieces. Ms. Schutz will try to have secular pieces for next year.  However, as teachers we must stress to our students that sacred music is a large portion of the body of choral music and that we are not teaching religion or faith practices.  We would be remiss in not exposing our students to this literature.

6.  The auditions will be judged by a team of persons who will gather together next October for the purpose listening to these CD’s and preparing the choir lists. If you are interested in helping with this, email President Schutz.

7.  In the event that the audition pieces are long, Ms. Schutz will decide how much of the piece will be performed for the audition. It was felt that the audition needed to be 3-4 minutes long to be a good representation of the student’s abilities..

8.  The 2011 schedule:  The schedule will be adjusted to take into consideration how long many of the students travel on the first day. It was felt that the rehearsals were too long, The rehearsals were lengthened this year at the request of the conductors.

The breaks will be shortened and staggered so that both choirs are not in the halls at the same time.

E.  The R&S chairs need to submit reports to ACDA.  This can be done on the national web-site. A copy will automatically go to our president.

F.  Other:

1.  Congratulations of Beth Borchert-Thomas and Paul Hallsted for the excellent honor choir performance at NMMEA.

2.  Marilyn Watson is singing with the adult choir at the ACDA meeting in Denver, several NMSU students will participate in the collegiate honor choir, and UNM choir will perform.

3.  The conductors of the 2010 choirs were very impressed with how well prepared the choirs were.

4.  Ed Torres announced that Andre Thomas will be visiting and working in Albuquerque April 1-May 2.  Check the NMACDA web-site for details.

5.  Vienna Boy Choir will be in Las Cruces March 20.  Check the web-site for more information.

6.  Thanks to President Diane Schutz for all her hard work and leadership in getting the 2010 conference ready.

Beth Borchert-Thomas moved for adjournment.  Meeting adjourned at 10:47 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Servold

News from Bradley Ellingboe and UNM
Monday, February 15th 2010 1:37 pm

The UNM Concert Choir, under the direction of Bradley
Ellingboe, will perform a "bon voyage" concert on Sunday,
February 21 at 2 pm.  The concert will take place at St.
John's United Methodist Church of Albuquerque, 2626
Arizona, NE.
 http://www.connectatstjohns.org/

The concert is free and will begin a week of concerts for
the group, culminating in their performance at the
convention of the American Choral Directors Association in
Denver on Thursday, Feb 25.

 http://acda.org/southwestern/thursdaybios.html

Performing at the ACDA convention is a high honor.  Please
come and support the only group from New Mexico chosen to
sing at this prestigious event!

The centerpiece of Sunday's program will be the set titled
"Remembrance of Things Past."  It features Herbert
Howells' stunning masterpiece "Take Him, Earth, For
Cherishing."  Howells wrote this piece after the
assassination of President Kennedy.  The program also
features the premiere of a new piece by Bradley Ellingboe,
called "Heart, We Will Forget Him."  This setting of the
Dickinson poem was written specifically for this tour and
is tailored to the strengths of the Concert Choir and
guest cellist, Professor emerita of cello Joanna deKeyser.

The UNM Jazz Choir will also sing several popular
favorites.  And the Concert Choir will sing several pieces
from its upcoming compact disc "Light."

2010-2011 marks the centennial of choral singing at the
University of New Mexico.  The Concert Choir's appearance
at the American Choral Directors Convention is the first
of a series of celebrations observing this milestone.  We
hope you can join us!

The meeting was called to order at 2:06 pm by President Diane Schutz.  There was a quorum present.

TREASURER’S REPORT: See minutes for January 7, 2010.

The R&S chairs were reviewed and open spots were filled.  This will be submitted separately.

OLD BUSINESS:

1.         Website:  The new website was designed by Daniel Rodriguez of Computer Net Solutions at NMSU. We will use this company for the next two years.  The website will be run by Alan Kuncel.

2.         Summer Meeting:  This executive board will meet June 14, 15, 16 in Ruidoso.  The meeting will begin at 10:00 am on the 15th.  Danny Flores will host.

3.         Upcoming All-State:  Ms. Schutz has some issues that she feels need resolving.  This board will make the following recommendations to the general membership at the January 29, 2010 meeting.

            A.        How do we get people to read to the bottom of the page in the web-site

(there is no recommendation, but this needs to be addressed).

            B.        All-State auditions:

I.          The problem of getting all the information from the old website onto the new has been solved.

II.        We used Hammond Music Services for this year’s rehearsal CD’s, though satisfactory, did not fill the needs of all the teachers.  We will contract with the same company that does the NMMEA all-state choir CD’s (Talley from Houston) to do ours next year, with the following expectations.

            a.          All parts will be sung.

b.         In the case of a foreign language, there will be a separate track with the language spoken.

            c.          There will be only two CD’s, one for each choir.

            d.         Teachers will be provided with a set of CD’s.

III.       Audition CD’s will be made by Alan Kuncel with the following condition:  each part needs to be sung by a different voice so that on the combined-parts track, different voice timbres can be heard.

Although Mr. Kuncel provided this service gratis in 2009, it was suggested by Brian Uerling that an honorarium be paid.

IV.       Audition procedures and audition team: Many thanks go to the persons who auditioned this year’s choirs.

            a.         There is a need for a festival chairman.  The president-elect will serve in this position.

b.         The chairman will serve as a clearinghouse for all auditions CD’s.  ALL entries will go to this person, be logged in, and then be distributed to the different audition teams.  This will provide use with a data base from the very beginning.

c.         It was decided by this board to set the first Monday in October as the due date for audition CD’s.  All entries must be postmarked on or before this date or will be returned to sender.

d.         The audition team will be selected by the festival chairperson and the president.  If circumstances dictate, the team can be replaced, but must start from the beginning with the auditions.

e.         The choir lists will be published on the website by the first Monday of November.

            C.  All-State 2010

                        I.          There will be a hospitality room.

II.        The theme will be “Singing in the New Decade”.

III.       All the vendor items will be available.

IV.       We will serve as our own crew to move risers, pianos, etc.

NEW BUSINESS

1.         We would like to host two regional church choir festivals, possibly toward the end April-first of May.  Music Mart is going to provide us a list of church musicians so that we may send out mailings and hopefully get some interest built up.

2.         We have an account with Edward Jones with only one signature on it.  The national association expects two signatures.  It takes an “in-person” visit to Edward Jones to get this fixed.  We need to get this done.

3.         Membership:  We need to think of ways to increase our membership. It was suggested that perhaps in order for one’s students to participate in all-state, the director must be a member of NMACDA.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Servold

MINUTES:

The minutes from the January, 2009 meeting in Las Cruces were posted on the web-site.

Clark McClean moved and Beth Borchert seconded that the minutes be approved as published. Motion carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT (separate attachment)

Brian Uerling presented his report. Danny Flores moved and Ed Torres Seconded that the

report be accepted.  Motion carried.

OLD BUSINESS

1.         Regina Carlow reported on the Collegiate Choir, which will replace the university choirs in concert at All-State beginning in 2011. This choir has been endorsed by NMMEA.

The choir will have its first festival this coming fall.  It will be a small chorus (32-40 members) with each higher learning institution represented, hopefully.

The group would like to present a conducting master class at next year’s all-state.

Andrew McGillis will be the first clinician.

The group needs assistance in the form of rehearsal space and some financial support from ACDA.

            MOTION:

It  was moved by Marilyn Bernard, seconded by Ryan Hatch that NMACDA support the collegiate choir, giving no more than $750.  Motion carried.

2.         Please encourage all to use the web-site.  It is always current.  There were problems with late registrations, primarily due to directors not reading to the bottom of the page.

The schedule for Youth/Elementary All-State is posted on the web.

3.         Youth/Elementary All-State:

There will be a hospitality room.

All three days of this event will be video-taped.

Beth Borchert and Paul Hallsted are in charge of programs and vendors.

Dr. Alt will be recognized at this all-state for all her work in initiating and running this event.

The persons running this event would like teachers to turn in to them a copy of each participating students medical form.

NEW BUSINESS:

1.         Music and Worship Festivals.  President Diane Schutz would like us to initiate two festivals for church music, one in the northern part of the state and one in the southern.  These festivals would be for adult church choirs with a well-known clinician to work with each group.

2.         We need to encourage all choral directors to join ACDA.

3.         John and Diane Schutz are working as advocates for music education.  They are willing to warehouse information and check the validity of rumors that get spread around. (Suggestion:  For a writing project for classes that must include a writing element, have the students write to a congressman or senator advocating for music education.)

4.         The clinician for 2011 are in place and Diane hopes to have next year’s all-state audition piece on the web-site by February 1, 2010.

MOTION:

Steven Huber moved, Ken Miller seconded for adjournment.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Servold

All State Youth Choir Performance Notes
Friday, December 25th 2009 9:29 am

Rehearsal Notes:

New Mexico Jr. High All-State Youth Chorus

Nathan Parker, Conductor

 Print a copy

Dear Singers,

Congratulations on being selected to participate in the All-State Chorus this year. I am looking forward to working with you as this year’s guest conductor! I know that you will be enthusiastic and well prepared for this festival.

I have chosen a challenging program. Here are some notes and suggestions for each of the pieces that I have selected for your performance.

General Notes to Singers:
  • Please number all of your measures before you get to rehearsal. This will make the process run more smoothly.
  • Don’t forget your pencil and a water bottle!
  • We will be performing this program from memory.

Sanctus in d minor

  • It is important to keep the singing light in the baroque style.
  • The language is basic church Latin.
  • Sopranos, m.28-34, get a good breath and try to carry through this phrase with one breath.

Mi Yitneni Of
  • This is a hauntingly beautiful Jewish melody.
  • There will possibly be one or two solo opportunities in this piece.
  • Make sure to study the pronunciation guide on the inside cover.
  • There will be an instrumental soloist (violin) throughout the piece.
  • The overall sound of this piece is not forceful but haunting like the wind.
O whistle and I’ll come to ye

Keep the vocal style very light and bouncy on this piece
  • Pay careful attention to the staccato markings
  • Altos, starting at m. 54 figure out where you sing “on” and “off” the beat. This will help you with your accuracy.
  • The soprano solo on pg.11 will be the entire section
Blessing For A New Season (Shehecheyanu)
  • This is a beautiful Jewish Prayer sung in Hebrew.
  • Please spend time with the pronunciation guide found in the music.
  • Sopranos and Baritones, please learn both notes when your part splits.

Dravidian Dithyramb

  • I would like the Tempo for this piece to be “quarter = 144”
  • This piece will require incredible discipline for both rhythm and pitch.
  • Please use the syllables “di ta” on the last two eighth notes of each measure. This in similar to the “din tak” that is written in the cover notes.
  • Please learn your splits as marked (ex. S1, S2 etc.)
  • M.21-24 will be a combination of Sop, Alto, and Tenor depending on balance, so please learn multiple parts if they are in your vocal line.

My Heart’s in the Highlands

  • Spend some time and really study the text of this piece. The poetry is beautiful! What does it mean to you?
  • We will spend time working the beautiful phrasing on this piece
  • m.67-76,  tenor 2 please also learn the bass 1 part in addition to the tenor part
  • be prepared to use lots of rubato at the ends of phrases.

Worthy to be Praised!

  • This gospel piece will bring the house down to end the concert!!!
  • I will be looking for one or two soloists that can really handle the gospel singing style. (please feel free to embellish and take liberties with the rhythm to make the solos your own!)
  • The first 7 measures will be taken very slowly with a lot of rubato and freedom.
  • Please observe all articulation markings when you are practicing.
  • Please put a quarter rest on beat 3 of m.24 for all parts!
  • Most importantly…HAVE FUN!
